Huron Islands Adventure

To close out July, my boyfriend Dustin's incredible family invited me along for an excursion via surf to the Huron Islands. The Huron Islands are located off the Huron Peninsula in Lake Superior just east of the more well known Keweenaw region. The islands project off shore from the mouth of the Huron River, and nearby reign the Huron Mountains that shadow over the illustrious Huron Mountain Club.

This was my maiden voyage to the islands. I'd grown up with only kayaks and have heard stories of people launching and never returning. The islands are incredibly close to the mainland, but a glass-like Lake Superior can shift to unforgiving, ship-swallowing swells that'll easily devour small crafts with just the switch of the wind.

Of the island chain, Huron Island is home to a lighthouse built in 1868 and a few other boarded up buildings across approximately a mile stretch. Only this island is publicly accessible and there's but room for only one or two boats along the dock at an eerie, aged boathouse at a time.

These impressive granite mountains that anchor and emerge from Superior are coated in pines and lichens - this photographer's dream location. With such incredible ecology and geology, Dustin's sister Hailey and I decided to snap a few of her senior pictures while out for the day. We leapt from the dock before boating to the sandy beaches of the Mouth of the Huron to picnic before turning in for the day.
