Seabeck, Washington.
During the time I visited Washington State at the end of January, I stayed with my mom in Seabeck where she was the featured teacher for the Northwest Basket Weavers, Vi Phillips Guild, 2016 Retreat at the Seabeck Conference Center on Puget Sound. The historic grounds of the conference center look across Hood Canal to an awe-evoking view of the snow-topped Olympic Mountains. A coffee shop that ought to fit a max of three people (three very satisfied coffee drinkers, that is!) and a general store decorate the fishing docks. An abandoned school lies covered in vibrant green mosses, and just beyond in the woods is the recently unearthed cemetery. I took a morning run along the trails of Guillemot Cove where the undergrowth creates thick tunnels and the trees create a canopy at least three times the height of the forests I'm used to. Then I took to Scenic Beach, littered with oyster shells and a creeping fog rolling off of the mountains. The air was humid with a chill, but ever so refreshing.
While I wandered, my mom taught classes using her original basketry patterns in patchwork journals, patchwork with interlocking seam, vortex bowl, and bias barks. I stepped into a few of her classes to hang out with artists-alike and indulged in adventure stories over the sweet, earthy scent of barks and roots.
