Christmas Tree 2020
On an unusually warm December evening, we adorned ourselves in cozy sweaters to harvest our Christmas tree at the back of our property as the sun melded into a maple horizon. I wrapped Emmett in a worn, old afghan and pulled him in an infant sled sans the snow. Earlier that day, Ayden had chosen a healthy blue spruce tucked beneath a grand maple tree at the back of our orchard. It was Ayden who put his now nearly 8 year old hands to work and sawed down the conifer, with Dustin supporting the top to prevent any felled tree drama. With eagerness and excitement, Ayden hauled our Christmas tree back to the house, neglecting to wear gloves because he simply couldn’t wait to stand it back up and dress its branches. Ignoring the trendy rules of Instagram and Pinterest, we decorated our tree with mismatched, handmade ornaments, along with a few others collected over the years that too harness unique stories. While the greater of 2020 has presented unprecedented challenges, there’s no white light sterility in our house, but rather strands of multi-colored joy exuding from our now frosted windows.
