Emmett + Flower | A Boy and His Chicken

A light post today, but I couldn’t help but share a few more photos than I already have of our Emmett with his “baby chick” that he smittenly named Flower. While we currently and sadly don’t have a rooster of our own (we think a coyote took ours out in the early spring), we fortunately have one of my best friends and her flock a few miles away. After one of our sweetest hens went broody, she graciously gave us a few eggs that we suspected to be fertile. We started with seven eggs and set our hen up in her own little coop. Flower was our lone chick that hatched and he/she is the perfect new addition to our flock!

Emmett and Flower are inseparable, and we suspect Flower may be partly made of titanium… teaching Em to be gentle and respectful of the chick is top priority, but as you can imagine, there’s definitely sketchy moments with a toddler handling a bird with great enthusiasm. Flower prefers to ride on Emmett’s shoulders or up in his hair. You can catch Emmett gingerly placing Flower in apple trees, then climbing up to meet the chick. Flower also often hangs out in the jungle gym and in his Hot Wheels parking ramp. Most recently, Emmett and Flower have discovered a love for biking together. Despite Emmett usually defaulting to riding fast and wild, he very carefully tiptoes on his balance bike and ensures Flower feels safe. When Flower has had enough of anything, she’ll fly off of Emmett and wait for him to pick her back up to return he/she to their mama.

p.s. if you look at the bottom right of the final image, that is definitely our dog’s nose and tongue, hahaha
