B+P's Studio South MQT Maternity Session
As if it isn’t rewarding enough to document a single chapter in the lives of others, I was lucky enough to work with Brian and Patricia for a third time this spring! Back in 2021, I photographed Brian and Patricia’s engagement photos around Little Presque. In 2022, I photographed their garden and greenhouse wedding at Nagelkirk. Although I’ve greatly reduced my current session capacity while being home with my kids, I immediately responded heck yes when Patricia inquired about maternity photos! Since their wedding, they’ve lived in multiple different states, yet found themselves visiting Marquette for a more local baby shower.
Patricia chose low-fuss and timeless outfits, so I suggested we rent out Studio South Marquette for an equally classic and minimalistic atmosphere. This was also a guard against weather. Even with an unseasonably mild winter, it’s impossible to predict whether you’ll be marching through muck, wading through lake effect snow, or anything in-between in March in the Upper Peninsula!
While I don’t advertise myself as a studio photographer, I actually love working in studio spaces on occasion too! In the photography world, I’ve found its common to believe that if you don’t use artificial lighting indoors, you’re incapable — which in my opinion, is a very unfair statement. Any light - whether it be artificial or natural - isn’t created equal all around. No matter what light you prefer to work with, you have to understand the way it reflects on your subject, how the light reflects on your subject’s surroundings, the highlights and shadows it creates, etc. to know how to properly angle and position yourself and the subject. Studio South has been a great option to be able to rent as it offers a lot of natural light, my favorite. And natural light remains my favorite even when there’s an abundance or scarcity of it.
